Senate Approves Electronic Transmission of Election Results, Retains Manual Backup Okwo romeon Abuja

The Senate has approved the electronic transmission of election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal, IReV, while retaining manual collation as a fallback option where technology fails.

The decision followed the upper chamber’s move on Tuesday to reverse its earlier stance that had rejected compulsory electronic transmission of results from polling units to the IReV portal.

Senator Goodwill Akpabio
President of the Nigeria Senate

Under the new amendment to the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, the Senate endorsed electronic transmission of results as part of the electoral process but removed the requirement for “real-time” transmission. It also stipulated that in areas where internet connectivity is unavailable or unreliable, Form EC8A shall remain the primary instrument for result collation.

In addition, the Senate constituted a 12-member conference committee to harmonise differences between its version of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill and that passed by the House of Representatives.

The harmonisation process is expected to produce a unified version of the bill for onward transmission to the President for assent.
