WAYAS BURIAL: BASSEY’S FORGOTTEN SENATE INTERVENTION EMERGES AS KEY MILESTONE

Image
How a Ninth Senate Motion Helped Sustain Pressure for Former Senate President’s Final Rest — Agba By Undie Emmanuel Agba ABUJA — The eventual burial of former Senate President Joseph Wayas has brought renewed attention to an earlier intervention by former Senator Gershom Bassey, whose presentation to the Ninth Senate called for urgent Federal Government and National Assembly action to bring the late statesman’s remains home from London. Bassey, who represented Cross River South Senatorial District in the Ninth Senate, had raised the prolonged delay in the burial of Wayas on the floor of the National Assembly, warning that the situation could put both the Senate and the Federal Government in a bad light. The presentation, which was conveyed to Bassey through Mr Paul Ishang for onward submission to the Senator, became one of the early legislative efforts to draw national attention to the circumstances surrounding Wayas’ remains and the need for a state-backed burial arrangement. WHY SHOULD WE CELEBRATE “DAILY TIMES@ 100, FRCN@75?’

Image
Inside Stuff With MARTINS OLOJA, “The Guardian”, September 5, 2026, Back Page. "A Birthday Without The Birthday Child’ By Martins Oloja    On June 1, 2026, “Daily Times” (of Nigeria) turned 100 years. In April, 2025, Radio Nigeria turned 75 years. This tribute is about two institutions that taught Nigeria how to read and hear itself. How did we mark it? With awards dinners in Abuja on Thursday this week. Marked with speeches in Abuja in April 2025. Yes, with a newspaper that no longer prints giving awards to citizens who should weep about dancing on the grave of Adeyemo Alakija’s “Daily Times”. With a radio station that has more than 30 stations but speaks in 30 whispers. That is not celebration. That is a funeral with cake. This is a time of reflection, not celebration. The only way to celebrate “Daily Times” at 100 and “Radio Nigeria” at 75 is to recover them, restructure them, and restore them. Anything else is meretricious. Reason? "You don’t celebrate a library by b...

Atiku’s Petrol Subsidy Proposal Sparks Fresh Debate Over Policy Direction By Okwo Romeon

Image
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar ’s proposal to reintroduce what he describes as a “ targeted subsidy ” on petrol has triggered a fresh debate over the future of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector , with the Presidency questioning the sustainability of the proposal and Atiku’s camp defending it as a measure to ease the burden of rising living costs. The controversy has also exposed differences in the explanations offered by members of Atiku’s political team over how such a subsidy would operate, raising questions about the precise economic framework behind the proposal. Atiku recently said that, if elected president, he would restore a targeted subsidy on petrol as part of measures to restore purchasing power and reduce pressure on households and businesses. Atiku Abubakar,Former Vice president of Nigeria and ADC presidential candidate. I will restore targeted subsidy and put purchasing power back in the hands of Nigerians,” he said, insisting that his position had not ch...

THE FOUNDATIONS THAT OUTLIVED A TENURE: The Innocent Ujah Legacy and the Making of FUHSO A Special Report on the Pioneering Foundations of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo By Archibong Esuene

Image
Institutions, like great buildings, are often remembered for their visible heights, but their true strength lies in the foundations buried beneath them. The Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), is today a growing institution whose structures, programmes and expanding academic footprint command attention. Yet, behind the walls, laboratories, lecture theatres and administrative offices lies a story of beginnings—a story in which the name of the pioneer Vice Chancellor, Professor Innocent Ujah, mni, OON , is inseparably woven into the institution's formative years. Professor Innocent Ujah, mni, OON,  Vice Chancellor  Every great institution has a beginning. Some begin with magnificent buildings; others begin with magnificent dreams. FUHSO began with both—but the road to that dream was, quite literally, a difficult road. From an Unmotorable Road to an Institutional Gateway In the early days, the major road leading to the Benue South Youth Centre, which subs...

David Omeiza Balogun: Making a case for rewarding media loyalty in Kogi By Ali Abare

Image
Every government, at some point, must look beyond the obvious names on its appointment lists and ask a simple question: who has quietly served the party and the state without complaint, without noise, and without reward?  In Kogi State today, that question ought to lead to one name — David Omeiza Balogun . Balogun is not a newcomer to public service or to the trenches of political communication. He served at the Government House during a previous administration, where he was deeply involved in projecting the image of government in a positive light.  Anyone familiar with the workings of a Government House press unit knows that this is no small task. It requires discipline, discretion, and an instinct for what strengthens public confidence in leadership and what weakens it. Balogun performed this role at a level that speaks to genuine competence, not mere political convenience. His career, however, extends well beyond that assignment. He is a broadcaster, writer and public rel...
