Jigawa State is grappling with high pupil-teacher ratios, limited access to agricultural support and widespread food insecurity, according to new government surveys that also point to an expanding economy and significant participation in formal and non-formal education.

The findings, unveiled by Governor Malam Umar Namadi in Dutse on Tuesday, expose critical development gaps across the state and raise questions about how effectively economic growth can translate into improved living conditions for residents.

The reports show that public primary schools have an average of 96 pupils per teacher, while 34.3 per cent of farming households experience severe food insecurity. Only 3.9 per cent of farming households have access to credit, and just 7.1 per cent have contact with agricultural extension services.

The figures are contained in four statistical reports covering the 2024/2025 Annual School Census, the Non-Formal Education Census, the Agricultural Structure Survey and the Jigawa State Gross Domestic Product Survey for 2019–2025.

Presenting the reports, Namadi directed the Bureau of Statistics to work with the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and other relevant government agencies to integrate the findings into sectoral plans, performance reviews and the state budget cycle.

The surveys also recorded an increase in Jigawa's nominal GDP from ₦3.62 trillion in 2019 to ₦5.65 trillion in 2023, highlighting economic expansion alongside persistent challenges in education, agriculture and household welfare.
