The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Command, says the strategic role of the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone in attracting investments, supporting industrial activities and facilitating international trade is contributing significantly to Nigeria's economic growth.

The Command recorded a historic revenue collection of  N21.8 billion in August 2026

The Customs Area Controller, *Comptroller Immaculata Nyong*, said this while speaking to stakeholders at the Command's Headquarters in Onne on the record-breaking monthly revenue performance, which represents the highest revenue collection in the Command's history.

BREAKDOWN – N21.8BN RECORD

According to Comptroller Nyong, the August collection of *N21,797,527,617.84* pushed the Command's total revenue generation between January and August 2026 to *N70.1 billion*, underscoring the growing economic importance of activities within the Free Trade Zone.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR ABUJA/KANO IMPORTERS:

- Onne Free Trade Zone now busier than ever – If you import oil and gas equipment, pipes, chemicals – Clear at Onne Free Zone faster than Apapa – Less gridlock

- Increased revenue means more Customs checks – Ensure your Form M, SONCAP, NAFDAC are complete – Avoid extra examination that delays 2-3 days

- Onne to Abuja transport now N2.5M for 40ft – Higher than Apapa rail option – But if your cargo is Free Zone cargo, you save duty – Overall cheaper

COMPTROLLER NYONG EXPLAINS BENEFITS:

She noted that a well-functioning Free Trade Zone catalyses investment and industrial development by creating an enabling environment for businesses while ensuring that all applicable Customs obligations are properly accounted for.

The benefits of improved revenue collection extend beyond government coffers, stressing that increased revenue can support infrastructure development, enhance public services, and strengthen the country's overall economic capacity when effectively utilised.

REFORM-DRIVEN LEADERSHIP

The Customs boss attributed the milestone to the reform-driven leadership of *Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi* and the Service's efforts to strengthen revenue collection, improve operational efficiency, and facilitate legitimate trade through technology-driven processes and enhanced compliance measures – Including B'Odogwu platform and Time Release Study.

She also commended officers and men of the Command, as well as stakeholders operating within the Free Trade Zone, for their dedication and cooperation, assuring that the Command would remain committed to promoting trade facilitation, revenue generation, and economic development in line with the mandate of the Nigeria Customs Service.

NIGERIA ANCHORAGE ANALYSIS:

For our Abuja Dei-Dei and Kado importers – Onne Port is becoming alternative to Apapa – Apapa had 12 VACANT berths today, but Onne Free Zone revenue up means more vessels calling Onne – If you import oilfield goods, consider Onne – If you import general goods for Abuja, Apapa + rail to Kaduna still cheaper.
