Late-Night Fire Razes St. Mary’s Cathedral in Wukari, Blessed Sacrament Rescued by Okwo romeon
A late-night fire has severely damaged St. Mary’s Cathedral, Wukari, destroying most of the church’s interior and leaving only the structure’s walls standing after the inferno on Wednesday night.
In an official statement, the Catholic Diocese of Wukari confirmed that the incident occurred at about 9:40 p.m. on March 4, 2026, shortly after choir members had concluded their midweek rehearsal and left the cathedral.
According to the statement, a priest and two other individuals were still praying inside the church when the priest suddenly heard an electrical spark from the ceiling. Moments later, smoke and flames began to spread rapidly through the building.
The priest immediately removed the Blessed Sacrament from the tabernacle and rushed out to alert security personnel and call for help.
Parishioners and nearby residents quickly responded in an attempt to put out the fire, but their efforts could not stop the raging flames which eventually engulfed the church.
The fire destroyed most items inside the cathedral, including furniture and other church property. However, the Blessed Sacrament, some altar chairs, musical instruments, and a few liturgical vestments and sacred vessels were successfully rescued.
Despite the heavy losses, the diocese expressed gratitude to those who assisted during the emergency and to members of the public who have shown solidarity through prayers and messages of encouragement.
“We sincerely appreciate the quick response and support of everyone who assisted during the emergency,” the statement noted.
The diocese also appealed for continued prayers as it seeks strength to overcome the setback and rebuild.
The statement was signed by Simon Akuraga, Chancellor of the Diocese.
