FAKE DRUGS: Customs Hands Over Seized Consignment to NAFDAC By Tonia Sade Port high Courts
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Port Harcourt Area 1 Command has handed over a massive seizure of fake pharmaceutical products to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). The seizure, valued at ₦3.29 million, was made from a 40-foot container falsely declared as motorcycle spare parts from China.
A Critical Victory
Comptroller Yola Hashim, the Customs Area Controller, described the seizure as a critical victory against those endangering Nigerian lives with fake drugs. He emphasized that fake drugs kill, destroy families, weaken the healthcare system, and pose a serious threat to national security. "Those involved in such acts are no different from terrorists," he stated.
Collaboration and Commitment
The seizure was made possible through intelligence from sister agencies and collaboration between NCS and NAFDAC. Comptroller Hashim called for stronger collaboration among regulatory and security agencies to move from reactive seizures to proactive intelligence-led prevention.
NAFDAC's Response
The Deputy Director of NAFDAC, Port Inspection Directorate, Adepoju Raufu, commended Customs for its vigilance and swift response. He assured stakeholders that NAFDAC would commence an immediate investigation, oversee the destruction of the consignment, and track the perpetrators behind the importation. Raufu reaffirmed NAFDAC's commitment to safeguarding public health and deepening collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service and other enforcement bodies.
A Step Towards Protecting Public Health
The handover ceremony, attended by representatives from various agencies, marked a significant step towards protecting public health and safety. The Nigeria Customs Service and NAFDAC have reiterated their commitment to combating counterfeit imports and ensuring the safety of Nigerian citizens.
