Vigilante Groups Run Amok in Karu Metropolis, Residents Live in Fear by Okwo romeon

Residents of Karu Metropolis, Nasarawa State, are living in fear due to the increasing activities of vigilante groups. These groups, operating under the guise of protecting the community, have been conducting unlawful searches, intimidating residents, and engaging in violence.

According to eyewitnesses, some vigilante members have no formal education or training on security and human rights. They have been known to make illegal arrests, demand huge sums of money from victims, and use private vehicles with no number plates to transport those arrested.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, shared a harrowing experience. "They came to my house, searched my belongings, and accused me of being a 'Yahoo boy'. They demanded N50,000 to release me. I had to beg my family to gather the money to secure my release."

What's more disturbing is that some vigilante members wear police uniforms and carry firearms, intimidating residents and undermining the authority of official security agencies. Many arrested victims are thrown into cells with hardened criminals without investigation, further exacerbating the situation.

Sani Musa Mairiga, an undercover journalist, has written to the Chairman of Karu Local Government Area, urging immediate intervention to regulate and monitor these vigilante groups. "The actions of these vigilante groups are brutal and inhumane. It's time for the authorities to take action and restore safety and confidence in our communities," Mairiga said.

The people of Karu Metropolis are calling for strict guidelines and collaboration between vigilante groups and law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and order without compromising civil liberties.
