A political network formed to mobilise grassroots support for President Bola Tinubu has delivered free medical care to 18,271 people across seven local government areas in Benue state, performing 582 surgical procedures in the process.

The North Central Grassroots Mobilisation Network, coordinated by Arc Sonny Echono, conducted a five-day outreach in Gboko, Makurdi, Otukpo, Ugbokpo, Vandeikya, Oju and Katsina-Ala. Services included outpatient consultations, surgery, dental and eye care, medication and specialist treatment.

Otukpo recorded the highest attendance with 5,597 patients, followed by Ugbokpo (2,771) and Vandeikya (2,681). Oju saw 2,066 patients, Gboko 1,845, Makurdi 1,779 and Katsina-Ala 1,532.

Across the centres, teams provided 2,385 eye services and 1,847 dental services. Otukpo alone accounted for 1,458 eye consultations and 1,241 dental treatments.

In Makurdi, medical teams carried out 201 surgical procedures — 96 minor operations, 54 eye surgeries and 51 dental surgeries — and distributed 224 pairs of free spectacles. Ugbokpo recorded 108 procedures, while Vandeikya, Katsina-Ala, Otukpo and Oju reported 72, 67, 74 and 60 respectively.

At Katsina-Ala, 73 patients were admitted to hospital wards, comprising 33 men, 22 women and 18 children. The Vandeikya centre also offered pharmacy, laboratory, X-ray and scanning services and distributed mosquito nets.

In Makurdi, registration and triage took place under temporary canopies as large numbers of residents, including many women and children, sought treatment. Clinicians encountered cases of severe childhood malnutrition and a newborn with a cleft lip.

Prof Steve Abah led the medical team. Over 34 service days the outreach averaged approximately 537 patients a day, highlighting both the scale of unmet healthcare need and the impact of free, community-based medical intervention in the state.
