Revenue Collection: A New Benchmark

The NCS has surpassed its revenue target, generating ₦6.1 trillion in duty collection for 2024. This impressive feat is a testament to the agency's commitment to improving revenue collection and trade facilitation. With a 20% increase from the previous year's target, the NCS is setting a new benchmark for revenue collection.

Digitalization: The Future of Customs

The NCS is embracing digitalization to streamline trade processes and reduce physical examinations at ports. The introduction of the SIGMAT system and non-intrusive inspection technologies is expected to significantly reduce clearance times and increase efficiency. This move is a welcome development for importers and exporters, who can now expect faster and more efficient clearance processes.

Anti-Smuggling Efforts: A Crackdown on Illicit Trade

The NCS has been cracking down on smuggling and trade malpractices, making significant seizures and arrests. With a focus on intelligence-driven enforcement, the agency is determined to curb the menace of smuggling and protect the nation's economy. The seizure of 273,670 liters of smuggled petrol worth ₦273.9 million is a testament to the agency's commitment to this cause.

New Directives: A Shift in Policy

The House of Representatives Committee on Customs has directed the NCS to stop collecting the 7% Cost of Collection charge and instead commence collection of 4% Free on Board (FOB) charges on imports. This move is expected to have significant implications for importers and the revenue generated by the NCS. The agency will need to adjust its revenue collection processes to comply with the new directive.

Leadership: Setting the Tone

The new Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has been decorated by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasizing professionalism in the service. With a focus on professionalism and efficiency, the NCS is poised to make significant strides in revenue collection and trade facilitation.
