ADC Convention Fallout: Military Intercepts Phone Theft Syndicate in Abuja By Okwo Romeon, Abuja
The aftermath of the All Democratic Congress (ADC) convention in Abuja has taken a dramatic turn following the arrest of suspected phone theft syndicates by the Nigerian military. The convention, held at Rainbow Square in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), drew a massive turnout of party delegates and supporters. However, the event was marred by widespread reports of stolen mobile phones and personal belongings, leaving many attendees counting their losses.
Organisers had initially sought a larger venue for the convention but were unable to secure one, forcing the event to be held in a more confined space. The overcrowded conditions at Rainbow Square reportedly created an enabling environment for criminal elements to operate freely among unsuspecting participants.
Security operatives, acting on intelligence, later intercepted a group of suspects along the Abuja–Bwari–Kaduna axis as they attempted to leave the city. According to sources, the suspects raised suspicion when they allegedly tried to conceal a polystyrene bag believed to contain stolen items upon sighting a military checkpoint.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of several mobile phones, including a high-end device reportedly belonging to former Minister of Youth and Sports, Chief Solomon Dalung.
The suspects were subsequently handed over to the police and taken to the Gere Police Station in Kaduna State for further investigation.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities say many of the recovered phones remain unclaimed, largely due to password restrictions and difficulties in identifying or contacting their rightful owners.
Security agencies have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to trace victims and reunite them with their belongings, while investigations into the incident continue.
