The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda,Prof. has distributed mechanised farm implements and improved seedlings to dry season farmers in Pankshin and Kanke Local Government Areas of Plateau State, as part of efforts to enhance food security.
Yilwatda said the intervention aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at revitalising Nigeria’s agricultural sector for increased productivity and self-sufficiency.
Speaking during the official handover ceremony in Pankshin on Tuesday, Yilwatda—represented by his aide, Mr. Sunday Bugama—explained that the gesture fulfilled a promise earlier made to tomato farmers in Pankshin and Kanke.
Items distributed included 88 solar-powered water pumps, seven mobile water pumps, one mini tractor, two small diesel-powered hand tractors, 500 bags of improved rice seedlings, 50 knapsack sprayers, 10 brush cutters, 100 overalls, and 40 pairs of rain boots.
Bugama noted that his principal remains committed to improving the livelihoods of rural communities through economic empowerment initiatives.
“This is a unique environment, and we have realised that we cannot depend solely on tomatoes and other vegetables. We are introducing improved rice seedlings to diversify farming and boost productivity in Pankshin and Kanke,” he said.
He added that similar interventions have been carried out in several parts of the country, including Southern Kaduna, Yola, Nguru, Mubi, Gombe, and other states, particularly across northern Nigeria.
“Within just a few months, we have reached over fifteen states with agricultural and other support initiatives,” Bugama stated.
In his response, the Chairman of Tomato and Vegetable Farmers in Pankshin and Kanke, Mr. Sudan Ishaku Wulmina, described the intervention as timely and impactful for smallholder farmers.
“We are grateful for this support. It is a dream come true for many of our members who had little or no assistance before now. The National Chairman fulfilled his promise,” he said.
Wulmina also revealed that a ₦10 million fund provided by Yilwatda has been disbursed as a revolving loan among registered farmer groups.
“We have about 548 groups across Pankshin, Kanke, and surrounding areas, and the funds have already been distributed to support their farming activities,” he added.
