Niger State Government Declares Work-Free Day to Mark Islamic New Year 1448AH

The Niger State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day across the state in commemoration of the Islamic New Year, 1448 After Hijrah (AH).

Umar Baggo
Niger state governor

The declaration was approved by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to enable Muslims and other residents to reflect on the spiritual significance of the Hijrah—the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) from Makkah to Madinah, which marked a defining moment in Islamic history.

In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Usman described the Hijrah as a timeless symbol of sacrifice, perseverance, faith, discipline, resilience, and unwavering commitment to righteousness.

According to him, the lessons of the historic migration remain relevant today and should inspire citizens in their individual and collective pursuits.

The SSG urged residents to use the occasion to pray for lasting peace, security, unity, and prosperity in Niger State and Nigeria. He also called on religious leaders to promote values that strengthen social harmony, including patriotism, tolerance, moral uprightness, and peaceful coexistence.

Alhaji Usman reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of Governor Bago to the successful implementation of the New Niger Agenda, noting that the government remains focused on transformative policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.

While congratulating the Muslim Ummah and all residents on the commencement of the year 1448AH, he prayed for Allah's continued guidance, protection, and blessings upon the people of the state.

He expressed optimism that the new Islamic year would usher in greater peace, progress, good health, abundant opportunities, and renewed hope for all citizens.

The declaration aligns with similar decisions by several Nigerian states, including Kano State, Kebbi State, Oyo State, and Kwara State, which also observed June 16, 2026, as a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1448AH.
