Police Must Have a Say in Trust Fund Management, Says IGP By Okwo romeon

ABUJA — The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Aise, has urged the National Assembly to ensure the Nigeria Police Force is represented in the management structure of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, arguing that the Force's direct involvement is critical to improving operational efficiency and accountability.

Speaking to journalists at the National Assembly Complex on Monday, the IGP said the effectiveness of the Fund would be significantly enhanced if police personnel, who are directly affected by its interventions, participate in decision-making processes.

According to him, officers serving across the country possess firsthand knowledge of the operational challenges confronting the Force and are therefore best placed to identify priority areas requiring support.

"The involvement of the Police in the management of the Fund is essential because those who wear the shoes know where they pinch," he said.

Aise made the remarks while appearing before the Senate as lawmakers continued deliberations on proposed reforms to the Nigeria Police Trust Fund.

The police chief expressed confidence in the ongoing legislative review, describing engagements with the Senate Committee on Police Affairs as constructive and encouraging.

Earlier, the committee's chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Mallam-Madori, voiced concern over the absence of the Chairman of the Police Service Commission at the proceedings, noting that the commission's perspective was important to the discussions.

Mallam-Madori assured stakeholders that the committee would pursue a comprehensive resolution that reflects the interests of all parties involved.

The debate over the structure and administration of the Trust Fund comes amid broader efforts to strengthen policing capacity and improve the deployment of resources within Nigeria's security architecture.

Further consultations are expected as lawmakers and stakeholders seek consensus on reforms aimed at enhancing the Fund's effectiveness and accountability.
