The Jigawa State Government has increased its investment in the Kila Erosion Control Project to nearly ₦3 billion, with Governor Umar Namadi directing contractors to expand the scope of the ongoing works to ensure a permanent solution to the community's long-standing erosion crisis.
The governor announced the decision during an inspection tour of the project in Kila, alongside ongoing road and bridge construction projects in Gwaram Local Government Area.
Protecting Communities from Environmental Threats
Governor Namadi described gully erosion as one of the most serious environmental challenges confronting several communities in the state, noting that it continues to threaten lives, homes, farmland and public infrastructure.
According to him, Kila has lived with the devastating effects of erosion for more than a decade, with significant portions of the community already lost to advancing gullies.
"Kila is one of the oldest settlements in this emirate, and for more than a decade the community has lived under the constant threat of gully erosion, which has already consumed a significant portion of the town," the governor said.
Project Scope Expanded
Although satisfied with the quality and pace of construction, Governor Namadi directed the contractor to reinforce additional sections of the drainage system and increase the extent of stone pitching to improve the project's durability.
He expressed confidence that the intervention would permanently address the erosion challenge and safeguard residents and their properties.
Collaboration with Ecological Project Office
The governor disclosed that the state government has already opened discussions with the Ecological Project Office to strengthen partnerships on erosion control across Jigawa.
He stressed that while federal support remains important, the state government will continue to invest its own resources to protect vulnerable communities instead of waiting for external intervention.
More Erosion Projects Planned
Governor Namadi noted that Jigawa has already executed major erosion control projects worth over ₦10 billion in Danmasara and Kalgo under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project.
He said similar interventions would be extended to other erosion-prone communities as part of the administration's commitment to environmental protection and climate resilience.
Project Cost Nears ₦3 Billion
The governor revealed that the Kila Erosion Control Project was initially awarded at approximately ₦2.6 billion, but the additional reinforcement approved during the inspection will raise the total project cost to about ₦3 billion.
During the tour, Governor Namadi also inspected the ongoing reconstruction of bridges along the Gwaram–Basirka Road and other road infrastructure projects, reaffirming his administration's commitment to regular project monitoring, quality delivery and value for public funds.
As Jigawa continues to expand investments in environmental protection and infrastructure, the Kila project represents another major step towards safeguarding communities from the devastating effects of erosion while promoting sustainable development across the state.
