AU Agenda 2063 Ambassador Ousmane Yara to receive UTA humanitarian award in Abuja By Okwo Romeon

ABUJA: Ambassador Ousmane Yara, the African Union’s Ambassador for Agenda 2063, is to receive the UTA International Humanitarian Award in Abuja on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

The award, presented by the United Towns Agency for North-South Cooperation (UTA), is part of activities marking the 2026 World Humanitarian Day and is expected to attract government officials, diplomats, humanitarian practitioners, civil society organisations and development partners.

Yara is being recognised for his contribution to the promotion and implementation of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, the continent’s long-term development framework, popularly known as “The Africa We Want”.

According to the organisers, his work has focused on promoting peace, human development and inclusive prosperity through advocacy, policy engagement and strategic partnerships across the continent.

UTA said Yara had supported initiatives aimed at empowering local communities, protecting vulnerable populations and strengthening solidarity among African countries.

The recognition is also linked to the organisation’s 2026 theme, “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities.”

The UTA Nigeria Country President, Ambassador Abigail Amalaha, said Yara had played a significant role in mobilising stakeholders around issues including poverty eradication, youth empowerment, gender equality and humanitarian intervention in conflict and post-conflict communities.

She said the award was intended to acknowledge individuals whose efforts have contributed to improving the lives of vulnerable populations and advancing humanitarian values.

Other individuals and institutions from across Africa are also expected to be honoured at the ceremony for their contributions to humanitarian service and community development.

The event will be chaired by Rear Admiral Samuel Alade (rtd), a former Commandant of the National Defence College.

A major highlight of the ceremony will be the unveiling of the UTA Social Centre, which the organisation says will form part of its broader humanitarian and community-oriented initiatives.

The United Towns Agency for North-South Cooperation is a global humanitarian organisation with consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It promotes international solidarity, peace and sustainable development.

The UTA International Humanitarian Award is presented to individuals and organisations considered to have made significant contributions to humanitarian service and brought positive change to vulnerable communities.
