The Society for Public Health Professionals of Nigeria (SPHPN) and the Professional Association of Public Health Nursing Officers of Nigeria (PAPHNON) are convening their 6th and 37th joint conferences respectively in Abuja, with focus on innovation, health equity and global health security.

The conference, scheduled for August 24 to 29, 2026, will be held at the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), Abuja, with daily activities beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Prof. Stephen Abah.

Themed “Public Health in a Changing World: Innovation, Equity and Global Health Security,” the conference is expected to attract public health professionals, nursing officers, academics, students and other stakeholders to examine emerging health challenges and explore practical solutions for strengthening Nigeria’s public health system.

The event is being held under the leadership of the National President of SPHPN, Prof. Stephen Abah.

According to the organisers, deliberations will centre on innovation, evidence-based practice, professional collaboration and policy engagement as key strategies for improving public health outcomes in Nigeria.

Key areas of discussion will include building resilience and surveillance systems for emerging environmental health threats in fragile health systems, promoting health equity through technology, policy and partnerships, and developing adaptive public health strategies to address climate-related crises.

Participants will also examine the growing burden of non-communicable diseases within primary healthcare, particularly in relation to equity and universal health coverage.

Other sub-themes include the use of artificial intelligence and data science in disease prevention and collaborative public health practice, as well as gender dynamics and reproductive health rights and their implications for public health nursing practice.

The organisers said the conference would provide a platform for participants to exchange knowledge, present research findings and develop strategies to tackle emerging public health challenges.

Discussions will further cover global health security, environmental health, climate change, artificial intelligence, disease prevention and health equity.

The Local Organising Committee, chaired by Prof. Mustapha A. Jamda, with Mrs. Loveth A. Abalaka as secretary, has invited public health professionals, nursing officers, students and other interested stakeholders to participate in the conference.

The organisers described the gathering as an important platform for strengthening professional collaboration and advancing innovative approaches to public health practice in Nigeria and beyond.
