The five-day programme, themed “Gender and Environmental Justice in Water Politics of the Lake Chad Basin,” was held under the broader theme, “Aral Sea Basin and Lake Chad Basin: Interdisciplinary Knowledge for Sustainable River Basin Governance Amidst Climate Change.”
Funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by IHE Delft, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Intercommunity Development Social Organisation (IDS Nigeria), the programme brought together MSc and PhD students as well as junior researchers from universities and research institutions across the Lake Chad Basin.
Participants were exposed to lectures, panel discussions and practical field visits designed to deepen their understanding of climate-related challenges and sustainable water management.
The field visits covered key sites, including Alo Dam, the Borno State Water Treatment Plant, BOSADP Green House and L-PRES, providing participants with practical insights into flood recovery, water governance, climate adaptation and drought-resilient livelihoods.
Organisers said the programme was designed to equip emerging researchers with knowledge and practical skills that would strengthen their research and dissertation work, while enabling them to contribute to evidence-based policies and programmes addressing climate change and socio-economic challenges in the Lake Chad region.
The organisers also emphasised the importance of integrating gender and environmental justice into water politics, particularly as communities around the Lake Chad Basin continue to face growing pressures from climate change, water insecurity and declining livelihoods.
IDS Nigeria, on behalf of the organisers, expressed appreciation to the Borno State Government, partners, resource persons and the military for their support in ensuring the success and security of the programme.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening research capacity and promoting sustainable water governance and climate resilience across the Lake Chad Basin.
