INEC Extends Deadline for 2027 Governorship, Assembly Candidates’ Lists By Okwo Romeon
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit the lists of their candidates for the 2027 Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
The Commission said the deadline, which was originally fixed for Saturday, August 8, 2026, has now been moved to Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, the electoral body said the extension followed appeals from political parties for additional time to complete the submission process through the dedicated online portal.
Meanwhile, INEC has announced the suspension of further PVC collection in Osun State as the Commission begins preparations for the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
According to the Commission, voters who applied for replacement of lost, damaged or defaced Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have until midnight on Sunday, August 9, to download printable copies of their cards.
INEC explained that the deadline would enable it to compile data on downloaded replacement PVCs and establish the final statistics of collected cards ahead of the Osun governorship poll.
The Commission recalled that PVC collection in Osun commenced at the Registration Area level from July 22 to 28, 2026. Following complaints about large crowds and difficulties encountered by voters at collection centres, the exercise was extended to July 31.
Collection subsequently moved to the Local Government Area level and continued from August 1 to 7, 2026.
INEC also disclosed that replacement downloadable PVCs had been made available to affected voters in Odo-Otin and Ife Central Local Government Areas following the theft of cards during separate attacks on two collection centres.
The electoral body assured affected voters that the stolen PVCs could not be used to vote.
INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible and inclusive governorship election in Osun State on August 15, 2026.
The Commission urged political parties, candidates and voters to comply with all electoral guidelines as preparations for both the immediate Osun poll and the 2027 general elections continue.
