Nigeria’s Armed Forces Receive Historic 30–80% Salary Boost as Defence Minister Hails President Tinubu by David Agba Abuja

In a major boost for Nigeria’s military, Defence Minister General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) has publicly thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a significant salary increase for personnel across the Armed Forces.

The new package, which takes effect from 1 September 2026, will raise pay by between 30 and 80 percent for approximately 250,000 officers and soldiers. Junior ranks—from Private to Staff Sergeant—will receive the highest increase of 80 percent. Middle-tier personnel, ranging from Warrant Officer to Colonel, will see a 50 percent rise, while senior military leaders will get a 30 percent increase.

The adjustment raises the annual personnel cost from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion. Minister Musa described the decision as a clear demonstration of the President’s commitment to the welfare of those who protect the nation.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has once again shown unwavering leadership and empathy for the brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day,” Musa said. “By matching words with concrete action, he has proved that the welfare of our troops remains a top priority.”

The Minister noted that the improved conditions should lift morale in every theatre of operation—from the fight against insurgency in the North East to efforts against banditry, oil theft, and kidnapping across the country. He assured the President and the public that the Armed Forces would respond with greater vigour, discipline, and operational effectiveness.

Musa also called on all officers and men to treat the pay rise as a renewed call to duty, urging them to intensify efforts to neutralise security threats, protect civilians, and restore stability nationwide. He reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to President Tinubu’s broader agenda of modernising equipment, improving technology, and raising living standards for military personnel and their families.

The statement was issued by Leah Katung-Babatunde, Special Adviser (Media) to the Honourable Minister of Defence.
