Residents Raise Alarm Over Overflowing Refuse on Abuja-Keffi Expressway By Okwo Romeon Abuja
Residents and youths of Mararaba, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, have raised the alarm over an urgent public health and road safety threat posed by heaps of refuse overflowing from a collection centre onto the Abuja-Keffi Expressway.
The residents are calling on the Nasarawa State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority (NASWAMSA) to immediately evacuate the mounting refuse before the situation deteriorates further, particularly amid the ongoing rainy season.

The appeal was contained in a letter signed by Comrade Isah Nasiru, Ado Youth Leader and Interim Publicity Secretary, who warned that the overflowing waste had become a serious concern for residents, traders, motorists and pedestrians using the busy corridor.
According to the residents, the refuse has accumulated over the past weeks to the point where waste and dustbins are spilling onto the shoulder of the expressway, creating what they described as an avoidable health, environmental and road safety hazard.
They expressed concern that the decomposing waste could attract flies and produce foul odour, while potentially exposing nearby residents and traders to sanitation-related diseases.
The residents also warned that rainfall could wash refuse into drainage channels, blocking waterways and increasing the risk of flooding in the area.
Beyond the environmental concerns, they said the encroachment of refuse onto the expressway could endanger motorists and pedestrians, while the condition of the collection centre presents a poor image of the area to visitors entering Abuja and Nasarawa State.
They therefore urged NASWAMSA to urgently clear the accumulated waste, increase the frequency of evacuation, provide additional and properly covered waste bins, and deploy sanitation enforcement officers to prevent indiscriminate dumping around the collection centre.
The residents stressed that immediate action was necessary to prevent the situation from developing into a larger public health, environmental and traffic safety crisis.
They appealed to the authority to intervene without delay, saying prompt evacuation of the refuse would protect residents, improve sanitation and restore the cleanliness of one of the major entry corridors into Nasarawa State.
