2027 ELECTION: INEC CHAIRMAN ORDERS STAFF TO ‘CONFRONT THE POLL FRONTALLY’ By Okwo Romeon Abuja
Amupitan demands tougher preparation as commission begins nationwide readiness assessment
With barely months to Nigeria’s 2027 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stepped up its preparations, as Chairman Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, ordered electoral officials to “confront the election frontally” and ensure that operational weaknesses are addressed before voters go to the polls.
Amupitan gave the directive yesterday in Lagos as he launched a six-zone national assessment of the commission’s readiness, warning officials from the Southwest that the lessons of recent off-cycle elections must translate into stronger planning, greater discipline and more effective field operations ahead of the presidential and National Assembly elections on January 16, 2027, and the governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls on February 6.
Addressing Electoral Officers, Heads of Department and senior officials from the region, the INEC chairman declared: “The 2027 General Election is here,” urging personnel to treat the remaining preparation period with urgency and purpose.

“
Those off-cycle elections have provided us with the mirror through which we can see into the 2027 elections,” he said. The chairman added that the credibility of the 2027 election would ultimately depend on what happens at the operational level, rather than decisions taken solely at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja.
