Abuja IDP Camp Clinic to Reopen: NGO Moves to Revive Abandoned Clinic at Durumi By Samuel Toe

The abandoned clinic at Durumi Area 1 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Abuja is set to reopen as the Leukaemia Care Plus Initiative moves to restore regular medical services for displaced families.

Founder of the initiative, Dr. Chikadibia Ukoma, disclosed this during a free medical outreach at the camp where over 150 women and children received consultations, drugs and mosquito nets.

IDP's at Durumi recieved aids support

Ukoma, a Consultant Haematologist and Vice President of the Nigerian Cancer Society, said the camp has been left for years without doctors or nurses.

We are reaching out to ensure this IDP camp does not feel abandoned because insecurity displaced them. They should not feel neglected," he said.

He recalled saving a pregnant woman whose blood pressure shot to 210 during a previous outreach. The intervention helped her deliver safely.

Ukoma also sensitized residents that leukaemia is a blood cancer, not witchcraft, and urged proper medical diagnosis for suspected cases.

The medical team — 3 doctors, 3 nurses and health workers — conducted checks, shared drugs, clothes and shoes. The NGO, based in Keffi, plans monthly visits to Durumi while working to fully reactivate the clinic.

Appealing for support, Ukoma said the initiative runs on personal funds and friends' donations and needs corporate partnership to expand.

Women leader at the camp, Hajia Fatima Abubakar Bello, said about 350 families displaced from Gwoza, Borno State by Boko Haram currently live in Durumi. She accused government officials of only visiting during campaigns.

She commended the NGO for its medical and educational support to children in the camp.
