2027 Presidency: Tinubu, Atiku, Obi, Sowore, Duke, Makinde Lead Candidates Race by Okwo Romeon Abuja

The race for Nigeria's presidency in 2027 has formally widened, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) releasing a final list featuring 18 presidential candidates and their running mates sponsored by 18 political parties.

The list, released in Abuja on Saturday and signed by INEC Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, brings together the incumbent President, former political office holders, former governors, activists and candidates of emerging political platforms.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, 74, is seeking re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with Vice President Kashim Shettima, 59, as his running mate.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is fielding former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 79, with former Transportation Minister Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, 61, as his running mate.

The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket is led by former Anambra State Governor Peter Gregory Obi, 65, with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, 69, as running mate.

The Labour Party (LP) is fielding Sunday Chibuzo Okereke with Hajja Bintu Konto, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket is headed by Sandy Ojang Onor, with Umaru Babangida as running mate.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore is the African Action Congress (AAC) candidate, alongside Haruna Garba Magashi.

Former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke is contesting under the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), with Kabiru Rabiu as running mate, while Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde is the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate, paired with Musa Lawal Daura.

Other presidential tickets on the final list are:

  • AA: Rufai Adekunle Omo-Aje / Shehu Hussaini
  • ADP: Aliyu Abbas-Bin / Chinazam Ike
  • APP: Kabiru Yusuf / Peace Egobia Ofordile
  • BP: Sunday Adenuga / Usman Turaki Mustapha
  • DLA: Moses Olusoji Adebisi / Nafisat Usaku Abubakar
  • NDP: Ada Elizabeth Fredrick Okwori / Uchenna Anthony Chukwuemeka
  • NRM: Nkem Esther Okereke / Nasir Muhammed Sulaiman
  • SDP: Adewole Ebenezer Adebayo / Usman Muhammed Bugaje
  • YPP: Peter Ada Agada / Patience Ndidi Key
  • ZLP: Daniel Daberechukwu Nwanyanwu / Hassan Khalid

Two women—Ada Elizabeth Fredrick Okwori of the NDP and Nkem Esther Okereke of the NRM—are among the 18 presidential candidates. Overall, 16 of the candidates are men and two are women.

The final list effectively sets the stage for a broad contest involving the country's major political forces alongside smaller parties seeking to upset the established order.

With the presidential tickets now formally published, attention will shift to nationwide campaigns, coalition-building and the battle for voter support ahead of the 2027 presidential poll.

The 18 presidential tickets now face the ultimate test: winning the mandate of Nigerian voters.
