Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has condemned the reported obstruction of the movement of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, in Makurdi, Benue State, describing the incident as unacceptable and inconsistent with democratic principles.

Tambuwal, in a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, called on the Inspector-General of Police and relevant security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable in accordance with the law.
According to the former governor, the reported action by a group of youths was “unacceptable, undemocratic and completely inconsistent with the kind of politics we should be practising in Nigeria.”
Obi, a former governor and presidential candidate of a recognised political party, was reportedly in Makurdi when his movement was obstructed by the youths.
Tambuwal stressed that Obi, like every Nigerian citizen, has the constitutional right to move freely across the country and undertake lawful activities without intimidation, harassment or obstruction.
He said the issue was particularly important as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that every presidential candidate must be free to travel, meet citizens, canvass for votes and present his programmes without fear.
«“Our democracy cannot descend into a situation where political actors or their supporters determine who may enter a state, community or any part of the country.”»
Tambuwal warned that political differences must not become an excuse for intimidation, violence or brigandage.
He urged political parties and their supporters to compete on the strength of their ideas, policies and programmes and allow Nigerians to make their choices freely at the ballot box.
TAMBUWAL DEMANDS POLICE ACTION
The former Sokoto governor specifically called on the Inspector-General of Police and other law-enforcement authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incident.
He urged the authorities to identify those responsible and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
Tambuwal stressed that political intimidation must not be tolerated, regardless of the identity of the person affected or the political party involved.
«“This kind of rascality must not be tolerated, irrespective of who is involved or which political party is affected. Today, it may be Peter Obi; tomorrow, it could be another candidate.”»
He said Nigeria's democracy would be weakened if political actors or their supporters were allowed to determine where candidates could campaign or interact with citizens.
The former governor therefore urged security agencies to ensure adequate protection for all political candidates and other participants in the electoral process as political activities gather momentum.
Tambuwal maintained that Nigeria belongs to all its citizens and that every Nigerian should be able to move freely and participate in lawful democratic activities without fear or intimidation.
