FG ORDERS ALL TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS TO JOIN NATIONAL RANKING
Universities, polytechnics, colleges of education to operate under unified framework
The Federal Government has made participation in the national tertiary education ranking exercise compulsory for all universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, CON, announced the policy in Abuja on Monday during a meeting with the Nigerian Universities Ranking Advisory Committee (NURAC), now renamed the Nigerian Tertiary Education Ranking Advisory Committee.

Alausa said the unified ranking framework would provide clear benchmarks for measuring institutional performance, identifying weaknesses and driving improvements in quality, accountability and global competitiveness.
He said the 2026/2027 university ranking exercise will begin in September, while the committee will determine when the exercise will be extended to polytechnics and colleges of education.
The minister said guidelines would be developed to institutionalise the exercise, with the compulsory participation policy formally communicated to heads of tertiary institutions. Funding support is expected from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
The Minister of State for Education, Prof Suwaiba Ahmad, said the ranking would promote healthy competition between public and private institutions and encourage them to address weaknesses and improve educational standards.
Committee chairman, Emeritus Prof Peter Okebukola, welcomed the expanded mandate, saying a unified ranking system, backed by sustained investment and stronger institutional capacity, would help more Nigerian tertiary institutions compete globally.
