NIMASA Launches Blue Economy Accelerator: How Young Nigerians Can Turn Maritime Ideas Into Funded Businesses*
Nigeria is set to unlock more value from its 853km coastline as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) launches a new initiative to turn youth ideas into profitable maritime businesses.
The initiative, called the *NIMASA Blue Economy Accelerator Programme (NIMASA-BEAP)*, is designed to support young Nigerians with innovative solutions for the maritime and blue economy sector.
The programme was launched in partnership with "Opolo Global Innovation Limited"
Why This Programme Matters
Despite having one of the largest coastlines in Africa, major seaports, and huge marine resources, Nigeria currently captures less than 3% of the economic value generated from vessels and activities passing through its waters.
NIMASA says this accelerator will help close that gap by developing homegrown solutions that reduce costs, improve port efficiency, and create new businesses for Nigerians.
Speaking on the initiative, NIMASA Director-General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, described it as a national economic imperative that brings together capital, innovation, and opportunity.
What Selected Innovators Will Get
This is not just another training. Selected startups will get:
- Business development support and technical mentorship
- Direct access to investors, commercial banks, and development finance institutions
- Connection to shipping companies, port operators, and industry leaders
- Support to turn ideas into commercially viable businesses
For young entrepreneurs, this means your maritime idea can move from concept to a funded company that can employ people and serve the ports, fisheries, and offshore industry.

How This Will Benefit Nigeria's Maritime Industry
For importers, port operators and coastal communities, the programme is expected to produce local technologies that will make port operations faster, make fisheries more profitable, and improve waste management at our beaches and jetties.
It also aligns with the Federal Government's National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy which seeks to increase private sector participation in the maritime sector.
Applications will be on the official NIMASA-BEAP portal when it opens on October 5.
Stay tuned to Nigeria Anchorage for the direct application link once it is live.
