Customs New Import Duty Calculator 2026: How to Check Your Duty at Apapa and Tin Can Before Clearing By Romeon Ropel
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched a new Import Duty Calculator for 2026 to help importers and clearing agents estimate their duty payment before their cargo arrives at Apapa, Tin Can Island, Onne and other ports.
This follows complaints by importers that duty valuation at Lagos anchorage and terminals is not transparent and leads to overpayment and delays in berthing clearance.
What is Customs Duty Calculator 2026?
The Customs Duty Calculator is an online portal where you input your cargo details — HS Code, FOB value, weight, and quantity — and it calculates the total amount you will pay as Customs duty, VAT, and other charges at Apapa and Tin Can.
According to NCS, the calculator uses the new 2026 exchange rate of N1,550 to $1 for duty assessment, and includes 7.5% VAT, 1% CISS, 4% FOB surcharge and ETLS levy.
How to Check Your Duty at Apapa and Tin Can — Step by Step
1. Go to customs.gov.ng duty calculator portal
2. Select your port of arrival: Apapa, Tin Can Island, Onne, Calabar, Lekki Deep Seaport
3. Enter HS Code of your goods (e.g., 8703 for used vehicles)
4. Enter FOB value in USD
5. Enter insurance and freight cost
6. Click Calculate — the system will show total duty payable in Naira
Example: Duty for Toyota Corolla 2018 at Apapa
For a Toyota Corolla 2018 with FOB $8,000 at Apapa Port, the calculator shows:
- Duty: N3.2 million
- VAT: N480,000
- CISS: N120,000
- Total: N3.8 million (approximate)
Why This Calculator Will Help Reduce Lagos Anchorage Congestion
Before this calculator, many importers abandoned goods at Apapa and Tin Can because they could not afford the duty after arrival. This caused containers to stay at terminals for months, blocking berthing space for vessels waiting at Lagos anchorage.
With the new calculator, importers can check duty before shipping and decide whether to use Apapa, Tin Can or Lekki Deep Seaport where charges are lower.

NPA and Customs Collaboration
NPA and Customs said they have integrated the calculator with NPA's Eto call-up system. Once you pay duty online, your Eto ticket for truck entry is automatically generated, reducing delay at Apapa gate.
Customs also said the calculator will help reduce physical examination delays at Apapa, as officers can pre-verify your declaration before vessel berthing.
Important Notice for Importers
NCS warned that the calculator provides an ESTIMATE only. Final duty will be determined after physical examination at Apapa or Tin Can.
Importers are advised to use licensed clearing agents and not pay cash to any Customs officer at anchorage or port gate.
